Meet the Founders
Catherine and Steven Martin are a happily married couple with 40+ years of experience in keeping love alive. They are authors and have taught courses based on the best of real-life experience and sound research. They have been public speakers, consultants, trainers and teachers on a national basis in their mission to help others have the safe, loving relationships that they deserve. They have been frequent guests on radio and TV and they have written for magazines, newsletters, newspapers, and other print media.
Catherine and Steven say “We are teachers and coaches rather than therapists. We work in the preventative mode and our programs are most effective for couples who are not highly distressed. We find that our voices of practical experience help many others discover or rediscover the love that they have been searching for.”
Steven and Catherine retired to New Mexico in July of 2002 and then moved back to the state of New York in February of 2004 to be closer to family and friends. They are thoroughly enjoying retired life. They have been happily married for 40+ years and continue to practice the art of creating a happy, healthy and loving relationship one word at a time. They continue this site as part of fulfilling their mission to educate, enlighten and inspire personal growth in a positive way.

A Brief History of The Positive Way
A Brief History of |
As told by Steven Martin: “The concept began in November and December of 1982 when Catherine and I were dating. We had both just ended unhappy and dysfunctional first marriages and knew that we had to do something different if our relationship was going to survive. I had been reading Dr. Erich Fromm’s “The Art of Loving” and it made a tremendous impression on me. In fact, it changed my life. I realized how alone I had felt in the midst of my first marriage and that to make any relationship work, we had to treat love as a verb…as an “art” as Fromm said; with understanding and practice. Catherine and I have been practicing ever since. We made a commitment then to share what we learned with the rest of the world. We did research for 14 years and shared our knowledge on an individual basis until June of 1996 when we formed The Positive Way and started conducting public seminars and consulting with Catherine on a full-time basis and me part-time. In November of 1996 we formed The Positive Way website to help spread the word (literally). And on July 4, 1997 I resigned from a high level corporate career of over 25 years to join Catherine full time. In July, 1997 we traveled to Denver and were trained in the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP) by its developers Drs. Stanley, Markman, and Blumberg. We published our book Talk to Me: How to Create Positive Loving Communication in September, 1997. Now we are writing new history every day. We have a vision, a mission, and a positive commitment to make the world a better place.” The Martins have been happily married for 40+ years and are now retired and living in New York close to their family and friends. They continue to help thousands of people through the information posted on their web site. |
